The Landells Clinic

Would you wash your face with dandruff shampoo? You would if you had a condition called seborrheic dermatitis. This skin condition is basically dandruff of the face and is characterized by red, flaky, dry skin that never seems to go away no matter how much moisturizer you use or exfoliating you do. It can affect areas of the face such as sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids as well as the scalp and body. It is triggered by colonising yeast and dandruff shampoos contain antifungals that control this yeast. If you are diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis your doctor may recommend you wash your face every three days with an antifungal shampoo like Nizoral. In addition to this they may suggest you add an over the counter hydrocortisone cream that can be used during flare ups. Please note that hydrocortisone is NOT meant to be used continuously long term. It is a short term treatment (ask your doctor for details) that is stopped once the area is smooth. The redness that is left behind will fade slowly. You can then decrease the frequency of using the shampoo as a face wash to see if it stays away but sadly, this condition is reoccurring. To find out if your stubborn dry, flaking skin is actually seborrheic dermatitis, see your dermatologist or family doctor for a diagnosis and treatment. Do you think you have seborrheic dermatitis? Let us know in the comments plus share this educational post to your friends. Many people spend months trying to “scrub” or “moisturize” this flaky skin away when there is actually a treatment for it. #trusttheskincareexperts #dermatologyexperts #medicalesthetics #notyouraverageesthetician ...
